>> PIT (VIP) Latrine

Description

• Odorless and fly problem is reduced to a minimum.
• Fabricated by AID Foundation, Inc. Using the bamboo-crete and ferro-cement technology.
• Preparation of pit measuring at least 3 meters deep and 1.5 meters in diameter.
• The slab has a squat hole (no bowl needed) and outside of front wall, a ventilation pipe, a natural circulation of air takes place.
• For a family of six, it will take 20 years for a pit to be filled.
• Latrine can be used for bathing and the floor is washed and
reduced the odor caused by urine being absorbed by the cement.
• Wet pits last longer than the dry pits.
• Better decomposition on wet pits.

How the technology works

• Squat hole in the slab and the ventilation pipe are connected through the pit.
• The natural circulation air is passing through the hole and leaves the ventilation pipe.
• During hot summer days with little wind, the latrine still functions well, since the black painted ventilation pipe gets hot and the air will rise, cooler air is sucked from the pit through the squat hole.
• All the odors pass up a pipe and are diluted in the atmosphere and
the interior of the latrine remains odorless.
• The Blair latrine are designed to be very effective in controlling flies.
• Flies are attracted to a latrine by an odor and away from it by light,
once inside the pit, flies lie eggs and when they emerge they
fly towards the strongest source which is the squat hole.
• Most of the odors passes the pipes, flies approaching the latrine
from outside are therefore strongly attracted to the head of the pipe
• Flies entering the pit through the squat hole become the
victim of their own instinctive behavior.
• The flies pass up and down in the ventilation pipe which unables
them to go out because of the screen on the top of the pipe and they finally die.
